"Current": An Inconvenient Website

November 8th, 2007 - Written by Joey

“Current”, a peer-to-peer news and information network hatched by the Reverend Al Gore,  is currently up andcurrent gore running with a beta version at www.current.com.  (Thanks to  Ryan from Arclightzero for the hat tip.)

The site appears to be catering mainly to the college crowd, with its users submitting videos of their deep and meaningful views and observations on pressing issues in today’s pop culture.  (I serve up the terms “deep and meaningful” with a large side of sarcasm.)

While visiting “Current”, the first article that caught my attention was one entitled “Feminism and Romance Go Hand in Hand“.  Yes, that’s right.  Contrary to popular belief, angry feminists are much more “romantic” than their more distinctly feminine, conservative counterparts.  The proof?  An obscure study by Laurie Rudman and Julie Phelan, from Rutgers University.  If you can’t land a man with your femininity and natural beauty, try persuasive “studies”… Or just sleep with them right away.  That’ll keep them around for at least a few months as a “bed buddy”, which is really the only reason why feminists want men around in the first place.  But I digress…

There is also has an entire sextion – Ooops!  Freudian slip! – section, rather, on “Hooking Up“.  Yes, that’s right.  The high priest of The Church of Global Warming and recent Nobel Prize winner has such integrity in the global community, that his web site has an entire section on no-strings-attached sexual conquests.  Brilliant.

This section of the site has a plethora of information on everything you’ve ever wanted (or not wanted) to know about casual sex.  They also have an assignment for all their faithful contributors: “Booty calls, first times and never agains – we want to know about them all”. Here’s a sampling from “Hooking Up”:

All lewdness aside, the site does have some redeeming qualities, such as users ability to upload their videos, something similar to YouTube.  Commenting is allowed for registered users, and is in a decent format.  However, I found it to be somewhat cluttered, much like the mind of our host.

I wonder why Gore didn’t simply focus on his “Green” movement on “Current”, rather than attempting to become some sort of “Jack-of-all-trades-and-master-of-none”?  Could it be that his narcissism has finally made him crack (it could be argued that this happened a while ago), by believing that if he can be a the icon of Global Warming, he can be an icon to all things pop cultur-ish?

Of course, the site wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to the Goracle, himself, here.

I’m the chairman of Current TV, and also serve as chairman of Generation Investment Management, a firm that is focused on a new approach to sustainable investing. I’m a member of the board of directors of Apple and a senior adviser to Google. I’m a Visiting Professor at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and chair the Alliance for Climate Protection, a non-profit organization designed to help solve the climate crisis. I was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982 and the U.S. Senate in 1984 and 1990. I was inaugurated as the forty-fifth vice president of the United States on January 20, 1993, and served eight years. During the Administration, I was a central member of President Clinton’s economic team, and served as President of the Senate, a Cabinet member, a member of the National Security Council, and as the leader of a wide range of Administration initiatives. I am the author of the bestsellers Earth in the Balance and An Inconvenient Truth and am the subject of an Oscar-winning documentary. My wife, Tipper, and I live in Nashville, Tennessee. We have four children and three grandchildren.

I’m not sure how long this site will be in existence, since I would assume that a man of Gore’s “status” would not want to be associated with most of the garbage that’s found there.  But then again, if he can make junk science appealing, I’m sure he can do the same with any other useless, fact-less information.

    I think he is just trying to bank on the pop-culture support. I don’t think he really cares about the content. My guess is that he is going to use this as a tool to build up support with the “cool” crowd of trendy internet video clip makers and hope that this sort of viral popularity will help propel his cause all that much deeper into society.

    The guy is smart.. Wicked evil, but smart.
