Pheisty thoughts: The Palin Jokes

June 12th, 2009 - Written by Joey

I think most reasonable people agree that the Palin jokes on Letterman’s show the other night were disgusting, sexist, and mean-spirited.  However, a lot of people–including the hags on ABC’s ‘The View’–have made the point that because Palin is an abstinence advocate, and because her teenage daughter got pregnant, she’s somehow due jokes about her daughter getting ‘knocked up’ in Yankee Stadium.

There are many problems with this line of reasoning.   First of all, it presupposes that if a person has strong moral (dare I say, ‘Christian’) convictions, they must be pure as the white driven snow.

How can someone who believes in moral relativity (whatever you think is right) even begin to criticize someone else who holds moral truths, and then tell them that they have no right to advocate those moral truths because the person who has traditional morals isn’t ‘perfect’?

Is the moral relativist perfect?  Of course not.  They don’t have to be.  If everything is ‘relative’ to the moral relativist, they can call out others as hypocritical because the moral relativist has no firm beliefs to speak of.  They don’t hold themselves to any sort of standard, because that standard could change whenever it happens to benefit them.

But here’s the real kicker…  If the moral relativist believes that everyone should have their own definition of what’s right and what’s wrong, why do they give a rat’s behind what Christians or others with traditional moral beliefs say or think?  Why would the relativist feel the need to attack a person of traditional morals if they truly believe in the idea of ‘whatever floats your boat’?   Is it possible that they are concerned that people like Palin–if elected into a position of great power–will suddenly insist that sex outside of marriage become a punishable crime?  Please.

I have never, ever seen Palin as someone who would threaten the freedom of Americans by telling them what they can and cannot do in their bedrooms.  The whole idea is completely laughable.  So if the Palin-haters aren’t worried about her coming into power and making premarital sex illegal (which would threaten their freedom to have as much premarital sex as they want),why are they so quick to use her moral beliefs and subsequent ‘fall from grace’ as a justification for disgusting and reprehensible treatment of her and her family?  If they truly believe in tolerance, and that we should all embrace each other’s cultural and religious differences, and if their freedom isn’t being threatened, why are they so quick to be so hateful?

Sarah Palin and her daughter didn’t deserve what Letterman did to them, and they especially didn’t deserve it simply because they happen to be self-professed imperfect people (just as you and I are) who are doing their best to live up to a high moral standard.

I must admit, however, that I do understand the whole hypocrisy thing…Let’s look at Al Gore.

Gore preaches his green religion everywhere his big, gas-guzzling jet will take him, and then returns to his multi-million dollar mansion that must require an amazing amount of fossil fuels just to keep it running.  Al Gore is a hypocrite.

The difference between Gore and Palin is that Palin isn’t attempting to legislate her religion on people by making them wear chastity belts until marriage, but Gore is attempting to legislate his morals by forcing the entire country (and world) to live by a standard that he preaches to us about but doesn’t find necessary to live out himself.  Yet he isn’t called out by the washed-up biddies on ‘The View’ for not practicing what he preaches.

Palin isn’t going around pointing out unwed, single mothers and telling them that they must repent, become chaste, or burn in hell.  Gore, on the other hand, is wagging his self-righteous finger at the rest of humanity and essentially telling them that if they don’t repent from their evil, polluting ways, they will be shunned from the enlightened portion of society, and will ultimately be burned alive for their sins…all while he lives a far more ‘polluting’ lifestyle than you or I ever could.

So when your relativist friends tell you that Palin and her family deserve what they’re getting because she’s a ‘hypocrite’, bring up Al Gore and see how quickly they shut their own self-righteous yaps.  Also remind them that they themselves have professed to be the tolerant ones, while they point c0nservatives and call us bigoted hatemongers.

Please tell me all about hypocrisy, women of ‘The View’.  I’d love to hear it.

You so eloquently wrote how I think and feel about this situation and other similar situations where Christians or conservatives are held to a different standard. Thank you!
