UW Waste

August 10th, 2008 - Written by Joey

I’m sure everyone who uses the bike path likes it very much.  After all, they didn’t have to pay for it…  Or did they?

This project was funded by UW-Madison’s Transportation Services, so if you’re paying tuition, you helped pay the $220,000 for all of those fancy solar lights that span four city blocks…and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.  The entire project cost $1.6 MILLION DOLLARS.  If you’re paying taxes in Wisconsin, you can feel all warm and fuzzy inside knowing that you inadvertently helped contribute to the ever-rising cost of a UW education.

My question is this:  With all of those wealthy ‘green’ folks down in Madison, couldn’t they have done some fund-raising efforts to pay for this luxury?   I guess I’m being presumptuous by assuming that they didn’t, but my thought is that if they had, we’d surely be hearing all about it.  If you have any additional info on this project, I’d love to hear about it.

This is a prime example of the tremendous waste in the UW system.  The next time you hear UW officials whining about not having a big enough budget and having to make cuts and raise tuition, bring this little project up.  In my humble opinion, this bike path was a luxury that the UW-Madison and the taxpayers of Wisconsin could have done without.
