Don’t you find it odd that…

February 26th, 2008

…we have a government that claims that it can’t possibly round up illegal aliens, yet at the same time believes that it can change the climate of the earth?

Is this supposed to be profound?
Which government is saying that “it” can change the climate of the earth? The government isn’t claiming responsibility for that, but is trying — albeit belatedly and halfheartedly — to take corrective action. I guess you think this is a bad thing?

  3. Joey Says:

Profound? No. I don’t aim for “profound”. I settle for the “plain as the nose on your face” effect.

And yes, our government believes that it can change (or control) the climate of earth. If they don’t, I’d like to know what all of these “green initiatives” and proposed taxes and fees are going for. I don’t want a half-hearted attempt to change the climate if it can’t be changed in the first place, buddy. So sue me if I think global warming is the biggest sham ever perpetrated on mankind and don’t want my money going to fund its imaginary prevention.

I also don’t appreciate it when government tells me what sort of lightbulbs I can buy, tries to regulate how many miles I can drive my car, uses transportation funding to subsidize light rail and bike paths, and continues to fund ethanol subsidies (paid for by our tax dollars) that are driving up the cost of my groceries.

And for what? A “half-hearted attempt” to change the earth’s climate? Please. That half-hearted attempt is robbing the American people and forcing them to live a certain way because our illustrious leaders believe they can reverse global warming. Meanwhile, government is ignoring their basic duty of keeping our borders secure.

If our government doesn’t believe that they can reverse global warming (thus my point in the first place) then why in the hell are they wasting their time - and our money - when they could be concerning themselves with real threats to Americans?

By the way, “Slade”, I’m curious to know what you do for a living?

  7. Slade Gorton Says:

Can the government change global warming? Good question. At least you’re not denying it exists like so many retrograde conservatives who can’t see past their pocketbook to what kind of future we’re leaving our kids.

So what would you have government do? Nothing? Shall we leave the corrective action to free enterprise? Like that would work.

What really annoys me about government-haters like you is that you’re willing to give Uncle Sam a big pass when it comes to waging an illegal war that is bankrupting the country but gleefully berate that same government when it tries to do something positive with your tax dollars.

What I do for a living is beside the point.

  9. Joey Says:

I’m not a government-hater. I’m a taxpayer who is continually paying higher taxes for government’s little pet projects, while they are failing at the BASIC FUNCTIONS of government. I’m their employer, and they are performing acts of gross misconduct on a daily basis that threaten my security and the security of my children. Yet they don’t stop there… They want to continue raising my taxes. I pay 40% of my income to the government. (And that’s just income and property tax.) Meanwhile, illegals are collecting welfare, health care, and are voting in my country. Yeah, it sort of pisses me off.

And I’m sorry to burst your bubble, but I don’t believe that global warming is happening. I live in Wisconsin, and we have seen the coldest winter in 50 years. In fact, a study came out yesterday that shows we could actually be entering a “little ice age”, that polar ice caps are actually EXPANDING, and that the average global temperature went DOWN. Check it out for yourself: http://www.newsmax.com/insidecover/global_warming_or_cooling/2008/02/19/73798.html?s=al&promo_code=457E-1

Did you ever stop to think that we may be leaving a future for our kids that leaves them slaves to their government, where they pay half or more of thier annual income to a government that refuses to protect their basic rights as American citizens and instead aims to control their lives by telling them how many miles they may drive in their cars? Of course I’m thinking about their future! I want them to live as free citizens. Excuse me if that concerns me a little bit more than believing that government initiatives can control the earth’s climate.

And just so you know, I’ve never been a huge supporter of the war in Iraq. In case you hadn’t noticed, I’m a Ron Paul supporter. I believe that the war is helping to bankrupt us, but it certainly doesn’t help our economic situation when government continues to increase taxes to pay for pet projects and at the same time ignore their “essential job functions” - of which includes securing our borders and enforcing immigration laws.

And yes, what you do for a living is important. Do you pay 40% or more of your income to taxes? Do you own real estate? Are you employed by a private employer, or the government? Are you a college student? An heir to a fortune?

As a privately-employed, middle-income person, I am deeply concerned about our country’s economy, and what this over-taxation will do for my children’s future. Will they be able to work for a private employer, or will they be forced to work for the government? If the private sector slowly dies out, who will pay the taxes that support the government employees?

This “green” garbage is turning government’s attention away from the real threats to America, will force us into a long and painful recession, will drive up the cost of food and energy, and will force people to live in a certain way - by the end of a gun.

And I don’t care about the children’s future? Look in the mirror.

I’m curious… is this supposed to be an attack on global warming policies, or immigration policies? Because your post implies that one of the two items is possible.

My belief is that government is incapable of doing either of the things you mention.

“What really annoys me about government-haters like you is that you’re willing to give Uncle Sam a big pass when it comes to waging an illegal war that is bankrupting the country but gleefully berate that same government when it tries to do something positive with your tax dollars.”

First of all, you’re a moron. Wait, let me back up. First you should know I really don’t have a filter. So when I call you a moron, your knee jerk moron response is probably going to be “close minded government hating rabble rabble rabble blah blah blah”. Luckily I don’t care, because you’re a moron. Ok, back to my original point. You’re a moron. The fact that you call somebody a “government hater” because they disagree with one (or several for that matter) aspect of our government means that you either make blind assumptions about anyone who disagrees with you, or you think everybody should blindly follow the government. Since you disagree with the war in Iraq, it’s obviously not the second choice. So, like the blithering moron that you are, you react more blindly than Dennis Hopper wearing an eye patch and label everybody that doesn’t buy into global warming propaganda as some far right wing radical commie hunter. Moron. Furthermore, about your little comment about berating a government for trying to do something positive with our tax dollars? We could debate about whether or not it is in fact positive (You’d lose by the way. Don’t feel bad though, it’s only because you’re a moron), but that’s not why anyone’s “berating” the government. It’s misappropriation of funds. It’s not the governments job to save us from imaginary threats (especially if the way they “save” us is to stomp on our freedoms). Let’s say I hire someone to paint my house. If I give them 100 dollars to get painting supplies, and they moronically come back with supplies to retile my bathroom, I’m going to get pissed. First of all, my bathroom tile is fine and retiling my bathroom ISN’T YOUR JOB. DO YOUR JOB MORON!!! Wow I got kind of convoluted with that analogy… Ah well, whatever, I believe I made my point. Moron.

10 “Morons” and 1 “Dennis Hopper with an eye patch” reference… sweet.

  15. The Dan Miller Experience Says:

Dammit Joey!!! I just typed up a rather long post where I called that guy a moron 10 times, made all kinds of genius points like I always do, AND made a Dennis Hopper with an eye patch reference. And then when I clicked to submit the comment, it didn’t show up. You blocked my ability to reference Dennis Hopper in an eye patch didn’t you?

I can’t possibly recreate that post, but to skim over my points:

    Slade- you’re a moron

It’s not the government’s job to squash our freedoms, no matter what imaginary threat they’re “protecting” us from

    Slade- you’re a moron

Dennis Hopper in an eye patch (I should SO get credit for it. I used it expertly in the post that magically didn’t appear!)

  17. Joey Says:

    Hi Nick. Both, actually.

I guess I should have given a little more background on what prompted me to write the above post…

Last week, four children in a small town in southern Minnesota were killed by an illegal immigrant when she plowed into a school bus with her van. She had been picked up a couple of times prior to this incident, but the police in Minnesota (and many other states) refuse to look into a person’s legal status because they deny juristiction. They state that it’s the federal government’s job to hunt down illegals. I disagree with this, and believe that every person who is arrested should have their SS# run to see if they are legal or not. This way, we can begin to deport those who are the biggest threat to American citizens.

As a human resource manager, it’s my job to check the legal status of those my company chooses to employ. Why, then, is it not the responsibility of the police to check the legal status of those they pull over or arrest? It’s not that difficult.

Now, the link to global warming…

On the same day that it was revealed that this young woman who killed the four children was an illegal, the Minnesota legislature passed a whopping $6.6 billion “transportation” tax increase, which includes scads of “green initiatives” and public transit funding (trains, bike paths, walking paths, land acquisition, etc) to help Minnesota “do their part” to help fight against this imaginary monster of climate change.

So essentially what the Minnesota legislature is saying is that they cannot possibly do anything to curb illegal immigration, but they can pass astrononmical tax increases to fund their war on climate change.

Personally, I don’t believe that the Feds can round up illegal immigrants. Likewise, I don’t believe that climate change is a threat. But I’d much rather have our local officials at least ATTEMPT to get some sort of a plan together on how they will help the feds enforce immigration law, rather than focusing all of their efforts on raising taxes that will go towards shiny new trains and green initiatives. If they can’t perform the essential functions of government of tax dollars - which includes securing borders and reporting illegals to the feds - they shouldn’t be playing around with trains and other boondoggles that further hinder their ability to use our tax dollars appropriately.

  19. Slade Gorton Says:

So “a study came out yesterday”, eh? Right. I followed your link to something called newsmax.com and read the article you referenced. It contained a vague reference to an unsourced NOAA study and another to an article that appeared in the London Daily Express, which bills itself as the “World’s Greatest Newspaper”. Funny I never heard of it before. Probably because it has the journalistic integrity of the National Enquirer.

Anyone with a modicum of knowledge understands that you don’t assess the extent of global climate change by looking at one weather experience in one place. Or even a bunch of places. Global climate change is about weather trends over time, not whether Wisconsin is having a colder than normal February. And I think you probably know that. But since it doesn’t fit your preconceived notion that global warming is a hoax, you grab at straws like the article in the London Daily Express.

There are people who deny the Holocaust, too. That doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

As for what’s happening in the Arctic, I haven’t come across any recent reports from NOAA, but here’s a link to a report from scientists at the University of Colorado that says older, multi-year sea ice is being replaced by younger, thinner ice: http://www.physorg.com/news119267989.html. In keeping with the half-truths perpetrated by global warming skeptics, it may be true that for brief periods of time there has been an increase in Arctic sea ice, but again the long-term trends is toward less and less ice cover. Here’s another link that shows the trend line:
http://nsidc.org/data/seaice_index/n_plot.html. Of course, any such trend lines are going to go up on occasion, but as with global temperatures, one needs to consider long-term trends rather than short-term anomolies.

I really can’t figure out what motivates people like you. You don’t seem bothered at all by no-bid contracts and cost overruns in the military, but you scream bloody murder when the government allocates some miniscule amount to promote conservation or renewable energy. Seems to me like you’re just kind of mad at the world and you’ve decided to pick on enviros as the enemy just because you can.

ARGH! I’m going to have to kick this Dennis Hopper eyepatch referencing business up a notch.

Be warned, experience. I’m going to watch Waterworld tonight, and I WILL be inspired. Oh yes. I will.

You know I’ve never even seen Waterworld. Can you even imagine how much I’d be dominating you in this if I were even remotely familiar with the source material?

Also, you can go ahead and delete my second comment up there if you want. I freaked out when I hit submit comment and nothing popped up.
